Frequently asked questions
How difficult is it to grow plants hydroponically?
Not very! It's actually easier, faster and arguably more enjoyable than growing plants the traditional way in a plant pot. There's also less mess (as there's no soil) and you're less likely to kill your plants.
How long does it take to go from seed to harvest?
This very much depends on what you're trying to grow. If it's microgreens, most microgreens germinate in 3-4 days and are ready to harvest less than a week after that. If you're trying to grow a full-sized Pak Choi on the other hand, you'll need to allow a few weeks before it's ready for the wok.
Is everything I need to get started provided in the box?
Almost. The only thing missing are the seeds, which you'll need to purchase separately for now. This won't always be the case however, as we do plan on adding seeds to our product range as we grow.
We recommend starting with hybrid seeds over heirloom as they're more forgiving. Although don't worry if you're unsure. Most standard seeds found in garden centres are hybrids selected for their reliability.
Does the quality of my seeds matter?
Yes, hugely! Like food, seeds are perishable goods and have expiration dates. When purchasing, make sure to carefully check the "packaged for" and "sow by" dates shown on the packaging.
How seeds are stored is another important factor. Avoid purchasing from third-party sellers on mass marketplaces unless you know and trust the seller, as such seeds are commonly stored and transported long distances in unsuitable conditions. Instead, look for reputable, specialist retailers who frequently monitor and control the quality of their seeds.
What plants do you recommend I start with?
Kale, broccoli and Kohlrabi microgreens are excellent, easy-to-grow starter crops. Kohlrabi and coloured varieties of Kale such as Red Russian are particularly visually-striking, making them incredibly rewarding to grow.
If you're using our smart hydroponic garden, start with herbs and leafy greens such as lettuce, Basil, Mint, Dill or Chives.
Do I need to regularly water my plants?
Yes, although all of our garden systems are self-watering and designed to provide your plants with constant access to water from a water tray or reservoir. This means you only need to check the water level in your microgreen water trays every few days or every couple of days during hot, dry conditions.
You rarely need to top-up the water level in our smart hydroponic garden owing to its huge 5.5L water reservoir. Nevertheless, we do recommend a fresh water change every 2 weeks to ensure your plants are provided with plenty of oxygen. This also helps to guard against issues caused by nutrient imbalances and organic waste excreted via roots that naturally builds up in your tank.
What amount of nutrients should I add to water?
For our microgreen systems, the answer is zero! Microgreen seeds contain all the nutrients needed already for strong, healthy growth.
For our smart hydroponic system, this depends on the growth stage (seeds and sprouts need less), the amount of water you're using, your brand of liquid fertilizer and what you're trying to grow.
As a rule of thumb, our advice is to treat it like cooking; you can always add in a bit more salt, but you can't take it out once added. If you're worried about getting the nutrient balance wrong, start with 50% of the recommended dosage on the bottle and up the dosage if growth looks sluggish.
Where should I place my new garden system?
Our gardens have been designed with modern living in mind, and can fit snugly onto countertops, shelves, side tables and windowsills with ease.
We recommend placing your system in reach of a power outlet and away from water sources such as sinks and taps. If placed near a radiator that's putting out heat, just be aware that some plants like the extra heat while others prefer someplace cool.
My seeds didn't sprout, what happened?
Don't worry! This happens to all gardeners from time to time - even to the pros.
A common culprit is over- and under-spraying during germination. If you drench your seeds, you risk inadvertently restricting their access to much-needed oxygen as well as promoting mould growth. Spray too little and your seeds dry out. Similarly, make sure the ambient temperature isn't too hot nor too cold. Seeds enjoy anything between 18°C and 24°C. Air circulation is also important; add a light breeze by setting up a fan or by opening a window.
Try again, you got this. Simply clear your grow media and you're good to give it another go.
What makes your gardens 'smart'?
Self-watering and automation are key 'smart' features all our garden systems have in common. Our microgreen gardens can be time scheduled to turn on and off every 12 hours.
However, our "smartest" system is our smart hydroponic garden (we even decided to include the term in the name). Wi-Fi compatibility allows the system to communicate over your Wi-Fi network and to pair with your devices. Control your garden using the industry-leading smart life app or use the built-in LCD touch screen display. Receive automatic alerts, schedule on/off times down to the minute and choose between two grow light modes that target different stages of plant growth.
When can I expect to see educational content?
Imminently! We plan to get to work creating content for our website and social pages during the first few weeks after we launch. We recognise that things look bare at the minute.
We strongly value being able to give back to our community via educational content, so please make sure you follow our socials and email newsletter to be notified as soon as new content drops.
Will products be available for a limited time only?
Yes! Our starting stock consists of around 100 units. We've done this so that we can provide our first group of customers with high-touch, personalised support.
Once they’re gone, we plan to move to a pre-order waitlist for our next batch.
I'm really struggling to grow anything, can you help?
Absolutely. Each of our gardens comes with a 90-day guarantee that includes complimentary guidance and support. If you need help, don't hesitate to get in touch via one of the methods listed at the top of this page.
How power-hungry are your garden systems?
If used every day for 12 hours, our 16W microgreen gardens consume a maximum of 6.3 kWh of power per month. This equates to a daily running cost of approximately 5p for the average UK household based on electricity rates as of March 2026. Our 10W starter microgreen garden consumes even less with a daily running cost just under 3p.
We even measured the consumption of our powerful 36W hydroponic garden and found that it used only 8p's worth of electricity per day when ran at 60% brightness for 16 hours with the pump on (you don't usually need to use a higher brightness).
Do you ship outside the UK?
For our launch, we will be shipping just to the UK. Although we can't wait to make our products available to international customers too.
